Lecture Demonstrations
The Science beyond the Music & Medicine

Musicians are like athletes. Each pushes his or her body to perform at the highest level. Musicians must be careful to protect their bodies from the wear and tear of repetitive motion stress when practicing and performing. An understanding of how to avoid injury is vital for a musician's health and well-being. This seminar will offer musicians at all levels – professionals, amateurs and students – access Dr. Craig Willis, Mercy Health Orthopedic physician who will, with CSO cellist Alan Rafferty's help, explain the intricacies of a musician's movement, proper posture, alignment, coordination and overall physical well-being while playing an instrument. This lecture demonstration format between a Mercy Health physician and a CSO musician will provide practical insights and answer your questions about how to stay at the top of your musical game.

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Musicians at Mercy Health

Music affects the many emotions one may feel and provide a powerful healing and comforting experience, as well as a means of expression for patients and loved ones. In partnership with Mercy Health, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra can offer services to help create a calming atmosphere in a cancer or other care setting, creating a great bonding experience for families who are visiting and creating an opportunity for patients to experience the beauty of music in a non-traditional setting.

Mercy Health Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Workshops

Research shows listening to music can not only stimulate the brain and the body-mind connection, but can also reactivate the brain, prompt memory and improve gait and coordination. Addressing these focus areas, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra can provide educational workshops focused on critical listening, music as a relaxation healing tool, using sound to elicit specific emotional responses and more. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra can provide musicians, conductors, and/or guest speakers to give special presentations to staff, doctors and/or patients on a variety of these topics.

Health Fair

The CSO can partner with Mercy Health to create a presence at local health fairs, promoting the wellness program and the importance of music appreciation and participation.
